Physical Requirements
The essential functions for include the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50-100 pounds on a daily basis; as well as stand, walk and sit for long periods of time. The conditions of work may involve exposure to communicable diseases, the hazards of radiation, and injury from intractable patients or sharp instruments.
Shift
7:00am – 5:30pm, 10 hour shifts, with some call and holiday coverage possible based on departmental need.
Job Summary
Surgical Assistant directly assists the primary surgeon during the operative procedure. As defined by the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, homeostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. This role will vary considerably with the surgical operation, specialty area, and type of facility.
This position has been identified as supporting UK HealthCare, which receives funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ( CMS). Therefore, all individuals hired into this position must comply with the federal CMS mandate issued in March of 2022. This mandate requires all new hires to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or obtain an approved medical or religious exemption as a condition of employment. Start of employment cannot occur until two weeks after receiving the full COVID-19 vaccination series or upon obtaining an approved exemption. Only vaccines approved by the World Health Organization can be accepted.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
The ideal candidate will possess excellent attention to detail; exceptional planning and organizational skill; effective written and verbal communication skills; basic computer skills; and knowledge of vendor equipment.

Preferred Education/Experience
Previous experience in an OR setting; surgical technician experience highly preferred for this position.
