Job Description Summary:
Under the supervision of the Site Director, the Cook implements the menu, purchases and prepares food, completes the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) paperwork and supports Center staff with nutrition activities in the classroom.

Required Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma.
- First Aid/CPR and Food Handler's card (must obtain before first day of work).
Experience:
- Two years' experience cooking for groups of 25 or more.
- Knowledge of nutritional needs, eating habits, food guidelines, & sensitivity to the nutritional needs of young children.
- 1-3 years' experience working in food preparation including - knowledge of safety, sanitation, procedures for preparation, service of food, nutrition, following a recipe, cycle menu, increasing/decreasing recipe quantities, meal planning in a group setting
- Basic computer skills.
- Effective communication skills with adults and children as evidenced by application materials and interview
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Associate degree in Food Service, Culinary Arts, or related program.
Experience:
- cooking for children ages 0-5.
- Experience completing Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) documentation and paperwork.
- Knowledge of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines and forms
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
- Commitment to professional development
- Experience working as a cooperative team member and follow directions and program policies
- Must possess organizational skills, time management skills and the ability to prioritize
Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and prepare nutritionally balanced, attractive family-style meals (breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack) for children and staff that include a variety of foods which consider cultural and ethnic preferences, and which broaden the child's food experience. Provide alternative food options for children with allergies, religious preferences, etc. Post monthly menus, add changes to assure compliance with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards. Prepare food in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, USDA guidelines and according to menus.
Incorporate information gathered from the Site Director about family eating patterns, including cultural preferences, special dietary requirements for each child with nutrition-related health problems, and the feeding requirements of infants and toddlers and each child with disabilities into daily menus. Maintain and post a list of food that children cannot eat due to allergies, religious preferences, or parental preferences as documented in child's file. Purchase food needed for meals and snacks served on site and for field trips for center-based programs. Refer child nutrition concerns to appropriate agency staff members.
Adapt planned menus taking into account the center budget, the foods in season, local availability and state and federal nutritional requirements for children. Work with Registered Dietician, parents, Site Director, and Early Head Start Health Coordinator to review and revise nutrition service plan annually and monthly monitoring of menus.
Clean and maintain kitchen, food service utensils, equipment, and food storage areas as required by State licensing, Child and Adult Care Food Program and Head Start Performance Standards. Keep all cleaning supplies, chemicals, and poisons in a locked cupboard at all times. Maintain high standards of kitchen hygiene at all times and comply with all applicable Child and Adult Food Program, Head Start Nutrition, Child Care and local food safety and sanitation laws, including those related to the storage, preparation and service of food and the health of food handlers. Responsible for dishwashing and the cleanliness of the kitchen and storage areas according to health and safety standards.
Keep accurate records as required by Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Head Start Performance Standards and prepare weekly and monthly reports. Complete all daily CACFP documentation and paperwork. Paperwork includes menu production records, monthly adjustment sheets, inventories, cycle menus, attendance sheets and food purchase receipts. Compile monthly reports accurately. Turn in all CACFP documentation on time. Post and maintain all required CACFP public notices. Submit records of daily food production, inventory and purchases, order groceries and related items. Maintain a current Food Handler's permit.
Attend training pertaining to duties, staff meetings and related planning sessions. Participate in reflective supervision. Maintain confidentiality of all children and family situations and adhere to professionalism policies. Communicate and work effectively with other staff members.
