The Town of Southern Pines is a growing service-oriented resort/retirement community with a population of approximately 14,500, seeking qualified candidates for a progressive and professional CALEA Accredited Department. Uniformed officers currently work a 4 on/4 off 12-hour shift. Successful applicants must pass a physical, drug test, comprehensive criminal background investigation and psychological testing.
The pay range listed is the minimum and maximum for this position. Any offer will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the candidate.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Employees in this class are responsible for patrolling the town in a police car, bicycle or on foot for the purpose of providing public safety services, answering calls for service and preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crimes. Other duties include conducting criminal investigations, conducting accident investigations, traffic control, serving warrants, performing special technical assignments, and enforcing the law. Employees of this class will have completed the probationary status required of police officers by the State of North Carolina and the Town of Southern Pines and will have exhibited the ability to work under the regular supervision of the shift supervisor and/or watch commander. The employee will exercise good judgment while performing duties and make efforts to promote good relations with citizens by use of good communication skills and professional police practices. The employee will conduct himself/herself in a professional manner at all times to maintain a reputation of excellent ,character and credibility in the community. Work is performed in accordance with established Town and Police Department Policies and Procedures, supplemented by specific instructions. Employees are subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Work is performed under the supervision of the Police Lieutenant or Sergeant and will be evaluated by the Lieutenant through observation, discussion and review of required reports.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Patrols the Town streets in a police car, bicycle or on foot, checks doors, examines occupied and unoccupied residences or businesses, detects and confronts unusual conditions.
- Enforces local, state, and federal laws where applicable.
- Responds to calls for service and conducts preliminary investigations concerning accidents, complaints, or crimes.
- Investigates traffic accidents and assists with traffic directing.
- Issues citations for traffic violations, serves warrants and other legal papers.
- Apprehends criminal suspects and violators of the law and gives information concerning laws and ordinances to the public.
- Regulates and directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic when needed at school crossings, funerals and other events/incidents.
- Maintains surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons or suspects.
- Interviews suspects and witnesses, gathers and preserves evidence, and presents testimony in court.
- Maintains order at public gatherings
- Prepares and accurately documents reports of activities.
- Maintains DCI Certification.
- Assists in the Communications Center when needed.
- Demonstrates the ability to learn and follow the laws and policies relating to law enforcement and departmental operations.
- Demonstrates the ability to develop skill in the use of all departmentally issued weapons, instruments and equipment and adheres to the minimum departmental standards regarding the use of such items.
- Possesses the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other Police
- Department and Town employees.
- Demonstrates the ability to maintain cooperative and effective public relations.
- Maintains a good line of communication with the public consistent with community-oriented policing
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must have completed all probationary responsibilities required by the State of North
- Carolina and the Town of Southern Pines
- Skilled in the use of departmentally issued weapons and equipment
- Maintains certification as a police officer with the State of North Carolina
- Demonstrates the ability to maintain cooperative and effective public relations through use of good communications skills and a friendly disposition.
- Skilled at working with other officers in a team effort.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- One year experience as a Police Officer. Must maintain certification as a police officer with the State of North Carolina. Must have success fully completed the minimum inservice training responsibilities of the Police Officer Trainee required by the State of
- North Carolina and the Town of Southern Pines. Must have successfully completed other departmentally-required training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This employee will be expected to participate in Police Department physical fitness assessments and maintain a weight proportionate to height in accordance with department-established standards.
