Job Summary

The Associate Provost supports the Provost by facilitating faculty affairs and shared governance, strategic planning, budget development, accreditations, internal communications, and special projects or initiatives.  The Associate Provost also serves as leader of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence, through which they support high-quality instructional design and delivery and oversee faculty development in the areas of teaching and learning, research, and leadership.  The Associate Provost serves as the Academic Affairs lead for inclusion, access, and belonging, and represents Academic Affairs as needed both internally and in external collaborations, such as with institutional partners or committees within the University System of Maryland

List of Duties:
  • Oversee faculty affairs, including onboarding and orientation, tenure and promotion processes, sabbatical/leave, Emeritus status requests, faculty grievances, immigration-related processes, fellowships, and activities to support faculty well-being
  • Develop and maintain faculty-related academic policies and the Faculty Handbook; Update policies and the Handbook annually with changes initiated by the Faculty Senate, Provost, USM, etc.
  • Coordinate with the University’s General Counsel on communication of relevant policies; Serve as a resource for academic leaders on matters of faculty-related policies
  • Facilitate a robust program of professional development for faculty (including on-campus, online, satellite, adjunct, etc.) in the areas of teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and leadership; Evaluate professional development needs of faculty annually
  • Development and implement support programs for faculty research, including research or travel grants, in conjunction with offices which oversee research and sponsored programs
  • Develop and maintain an effective program of leadership training/professional development for chairs/school directors, deans, and other academic leaders; Evaluate professional development needs of the academic leadership team annually
  • Develop and maintain a Faculty Fellows program to assist with major academic initiatives
  • Foster the use of technology in support of effective pedagogy
  • Assist the Provost in the development and assessment of an academic strategic plan, budget development and management, internal communications, and special projects or initiatives
  • Serve as a campus leader in accreditation activities related to Middle States Commission on Higher Education; support various discipline-level accreditations within academic affairs
  • Supervise the following units/positions, including overseeing budgets, personnel matters and evaluation, and strategic planning: Coordinator of Teaching & Learning, Instructional Design and Delivery, Faculty Affairs & Professional Development Coordinator, Faculty Fellows
  • Lead major academic initiatives as directed by the Provost
  • Seek grants and internal resources to support the work of Academic Affairs
  • In conjunction with the Provost and the Vice President for Inclusion, Access, and Belonging, serve as Academic Affairs lead in developing and maintaining a campus climate that supports all faculty, staff, and students to success through professional development, initiatives, and practices which foster belonging, equity, and inclusivity
  • Support faculty governance committees as needed
  • Serve as a campus liaison to USM committees as assigned (e.g., Academic Transformation Advisory Council, etc.)
  • Support the effective administration of academic affairs through facilitation of regular meetings or communications with campus academic leaders and faculty
  • Represent the Provost or the Division of Academic Affairs at internal or external events/meetings
  • Serve as a member of the Deans Council
  • Foster collaboration with USM or other partners (e.g., host annual new faculty social with UMES, transfer summits, etc.)
  • Engage in regular professional development/training related to the duties of Associate Provost
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Other duties as assigned
Authority and Accountability

The position reports to the Provost & Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs

The position has 3.5 direct reports, including the Director of Instructional Design & Delivery, the Faculty Affairs & Professional Development Coordinator, the Coordinator of Teaching & Learning, and Executive Assistant I (who also co-reports to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Success), and supervises 2-7 Faculty Fellows.

The position is responsible for budgets in their areas of responsibility.

While the Provost will have ultimate budgetary administration, this position oversees and possess signing authority for several budgets under their management areas and programs.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

A terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a discipline eligible for tenure at Salisbury University

A distinguished record of teaching, research, and service to warrant appointment as Associate Professor or above and the respect of the academic community

A record of progressive and successful administrative leadership in higher education

Experience leading successful accreditation(s) at the program and/or institutional level in higher education

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree

Experience with strategic planning, budgeting, academic policy, and faculty affairs

Experience leading successful diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives

Experience leading professional development programs for university-level faculty

This is a full-time exempt position, with a full benefits package.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
