BUS DRIVER

Possession of a valid New York State CDL Class B license with a passenger and school bus endorsement is preferred but not required. (Paid training will be provided to qualified applicants who do not possess a CDL – Training rate is $16.50).  Position is for 10-months with a starting rate is $19.00/hr. with a minimum of 20 hours per week including benefits upon obtaining CDL license.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions;
• Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;
• Reports any mechanical defect to immediate superior;
• Instructs or informs children about safety practices when entering and leaving bus;
• Maintains orderly conduct of children on bus;
• May be required to operate station wagon or other similar vehicle;
• May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude; mental alertness; dependability; good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Class B license with P endorsement, issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of appointment. Effective October 1, 2005, school bus drivers as defined by Section 142 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law must possess an S endorsement on their vehicle license.
