Job Description

Under general supervision from a supervisory person, performs major overhauls of engines &/orreplacement of major parts (e.g., pistons, rings, timing gears, torque converters, hydraulic systems, rear axle gears, 4, 5 & 13 speed transmissions, valves) of trucks, buses & motorized equipment with hydraulic mechanisms or other diesel engines, or acts as lead mechanic (e.g., provides work direction, training of others) on shift in garage over assistant automotive mechanics &/orlower-level automotive mechanics & performs preventive maintenance & service on cars, Low Speed Vehicles (LSV), Under Speed Vehicles (USV), buses, trucks & equipment (e.g., tune-ups, adjust ignitions, carburetors, brakes & valves, cleans carburetors & changes oil & filters) .
  • Adheres to all OSHA and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines.
  • Performs major overhauls of engines &lor replacement of major parts (e.g., pistons, rings, crank shafts, bearings, timing gears, torque converters, hydraulic systems, rear axle gears, 4, 5, 13 speed transmissions, valves) of trucks, buses & motorized equipment with hydraulic mechanisms or with diesel engines, or acts as lead mechanic (e.g., provides work direction, training of others) over assistant automotive mechanics &lor automotive mechanic 115 & performs preventive maintenance & service on cars, Low Speed Vehicles (LSV), Under Speed Vehicles (USV), buses, trucks & equipment (e.g., tune-ups, adjust ignitions, carburetors, brakes & valves, cleans carburetors & changes oil & filters) .
  • Operates test equipment to determine source of failure in electrical & ignition systems & makes necessary adjustment & repairs: road tests repaired equipment.
  • Maintains record of vehicle & equipment repairs & orders parts.
  • Modifies vehicles & equipment for specific tasks (e.g., installs lights, sirens & hitches) & performs body work
  • Performs other related duties as assigned (e.g., cleans shop & vehicles, & makes road service calls to start or retrieve disabled equipment. Mows grass, removes snow******)
  • Prepares estimates for vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Prepares and completes work orders
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of technical program in automotive mechanics offered by technical school plus 12 mos. exp. (or 24 mos. exp. in automotive maintenance & repair of variety of motorized equipment); or equivalent***
  • If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Revised Code, applicants must also have Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with Airbrake and Passenger Endorsements****, Renewal of CDL as necessary, otherwise requires a valid Drivers License.
  • Basic computer/technical skills, ability to operate hydraulic lifts*****.
  • Successful completion of a test may be required.
  • Knowledge of employee mentoring*, training* and development*, & associated safety practices*; skill in auto mechanics, operating hand & power tools, operating test equipment;
  • ability to understand mechanical & electrical systems or other procedures, understand manuals & verbal instructions technical in nature,
  • Read & write common vocabulary in sentence structure; add, subtract, multiply & divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals & percentages;
  • ability to apply principles to solve practical problems;
  • maintain accurate records,
  • demonstrate strength to lift up to 75 pounds**
  • Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures*
  • An established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills
Developed after Employment*
Any lifting above 50 pounds is supported with mechanical device and/or co-worker lifting assistance at TPS**
Training & experience requirements effective for employees hired into this position after August 2021***
Both airbrake and passenger endorsement apply to TPS. Airbrake endorsement only for Facilities employee. Employees must obtain CDL Licensure and appropriate endorsements within 120 days of employment****
