Staff Assistant I
Description
This position is responsible for processing initial and renewal concealed handgun permit (CHP) applications and explosives permits for usage, storage and purchase of explosives. This includes the data entry of applications into our tracking system, determining eligibility for the permit by reviewing criminal history record information for potential disqualifiers, corresponding with applicants, issuing permits and refunds as appropriate.
Examples of Work
Processes Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) applications and renewals. Processes criminal and non-criminal records by requesting, accepting, processing, and verifying information from arresting agencies and court dispositions, utilizing the Patrol Criminal History and other criminal justice databases. Processes teletype record checks by receiving, recording, sorting, and disseminating criminal history information over the teletype system. Interpret, research, and verify arrest records for entry into the Criminal History Database System for access by law enforcement agencies, court systems, etc. Uses analytical skills to research , interpret, and apply laws and regulations. Under limited supervision uses independent judgment to make legal determinations. Assists with the front desk applicants and incoming phone calls from the public.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Coursework/training in administrative/office support functions, procedures, and methods including the operation of personal computers and office equipment; research; or areas related to the programs and functions of the employing agency. OR Experience in performing administrative/office/secretarial support work including use of personal computers and office equipment. PREFERRED: Experience with Microsoft Office Software. Excellent telephone skills are essential.
OTHER: Regular and reliable attendance is expected. Applicant must successfully complete an extensive background screening prior to being employed, which includes completion of a Personal History Questionnaire. Applicants will be screened for a record of criminal activity and criminal history using a fingerprint-based check and before unconditional employment is offered. Applicants must be free of felony convictions, and cannot maintain a continuous association or dealings with persons, groups or organizations under criminal investigation or indictment or who have a reputation for present, ongoing involvement in felonious or criminal behavior.
