Description
The Muslim Life Center Director and Muslim Student Association Advisor position is a part time salaried position (20 hours per week) with benefits. The position reports directly to the Dean of Spiritual Engagement and Chaplain and will work collaboratively to build relationships with students and serve as a pastoral presence on campus. Working with the Dean of Spiritual Engagement/Chaplain, the Muslim Life Center Director and Muslim Student Association Advisor serves in an institutional role to help plan campus wide programs such as the interfaith baccalaureate and have input regarding the spiritual aspects of other traditions such as the Hobart and William Smith (HWS) opening convocation. They will also develop programming and provide a welcoming presence to students with diverse intersecting identities at the Muslim Life Center while working with the Muslim Student Association Board to develop programs of interest to students that focus on the Muslim tradition.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Share Muslim teachings and serve as the Khatib for Jum'ah Prayer on Fridays.
  • Organize trips of interest to students to support Muslim identity on campus.
  • Work with the MSA board to plan events that reach out to a broad campus community, including (but not limited to), a yearly campus dinner, guest speakers, film screenings, social gatherings, etc.
  • Work with the Spiritual Engagement team to build a sense of belonging for Muslim students on campus, and build community among a growing population of Muslim students.
  • In collaboration with student board, develop and run programming for Muslim holidays and observances that occur during the school year.
  • Help the MSA Board plan monthly Business meetings with lunches or other meals as they see fit.
  • Support student leaders in developing programming according to student interest.
  • Reach out to individual students to build relationships and student engagement.
  • Develop student programming and celebrations for Ramadan and the Eid, including community building meals and programs.
  • Support Muslim students, including providing Muslim learning and leadership development opportunities.
  • Provide confidential pastoral care to both Muslim students and any other students in need of support.
  • Work with campus partners to enhance student support.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and implement interfaith programming.
  • Work collaboratively to design campus wide ceremonies, including Baccalaureate and any other ceremonies, commemorations, and vigils as needed.
  • Support office initiatives as needed.
  • Participate in campus wide events, including Orientation, Commencement, Reunion, and others.

Other Information:

is a part-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position; the hours are adjusted to reflect the programming needs. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Pay rate is $29.00 per hour.


Qualifications
  • Have training in Islamic studies that will facilitate thoughtful sermons when serving as the Khatib for Jum’ah Prayer for a moderate group of students
  • Possess an ability to relate to students in a thoughtful and caring capacity both personally and spiritually, while providing pastoral care on a day-to-day basis and in crisis situations
  • Have strong public speaking skills
  • Ability to work with an interfaith Spiritual Engagement Team to serve students and develop programming
  • Ability to build community among an ethnically and culturally diverse Muslim student population
  • Participate in campus wide training including Safe Zone training and others along with continuing education either in person or virtually that will enable the advisor to serve Muslim students
