Head Start Teacher
Position: Teacher
Program and Location: Head Start, Holdrege
Position Summary: The Teacher is responsible for direct contact with children in the classroom, providing developmentally appropriate activities on a daily basis, challenging them at their level, and encouraging success for all students. The Teacher also provides a safe, pleasant, active learning and problem-solving environment.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure implementation of the Head Start curriculum, which includes active learning and practices that are developmentally appropriate.
- Ensure classroom management and lesson planning/implementation are occurring.
- Recruit, maintain, and train classroom volunteers throughout the program year.
- Ensure implementation of oral health practices.
- Be actively engaged in all Head Start activities and model appropriate behavior.
Tasks and Duties:
- Train and mentor classroom staff.
- Assist staff in updating the parent bulletin board by posting: lesson plans, volunteer sign-up sheet, center wish list, etc.
- Provide experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children, establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment, and support the social and emotional development of children.
- Ensure completion of the developmental and social-emotional screenings covering communication, gross and fine motor, problem-solving, and personal-social for each child by the due date
- Ensure that child growth assessments (height and weight) are completed by required deadlines and follow up if there are concerns.
- Ensure the playground is a safe environment by checking for sharp objects, head entrapment, etc., and facilitate repairs as necessary.
Education Requirements:
- AA or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field. Equivalent coursework will be considered
- Obtain and maintain current required Teacher certifications.
Required Skills:
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with Head Start families, other agency employees, and the general public.
- Ability to provide leadership to classroom staff, parents/guardians, and classroom volunteers.
- Model appropriate and professional behavior.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills.
Schedule/Hours: 40 Hours per week, Monday-Friday approximately 7:30 to 3:30 (August-May). This position has summer months off. Head Start employees who have summer months off are eligible to apply for unemployment during this layoff period.
Pay Rate: $13.38 - $14.69 per hour, depending on education and experience.
Benefits: Due to this position beginning in the middle of a school year, the minimum hour requirement to be benefit eligible will not be met for the rest of the 20-21 school year. This position will be benefit eligible for the 21-22 school year, which begins August 1, 2021.
