Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Endowment Finance Administrator position. The Endowment Finance Administrator is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $92,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Reporting to the Controller, the Endowment Finance Administrator has responsibilities associated with the administration, accounting, and reporting the endowment and related investments. This role provides data and other information to all operational segments of the institution, including the Office of the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, as well as the Office of Investments.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Accounting and Analysis
- Administer the necessary processes related to the endowment and other investments, including the annual distribution calculation, creation of newly donated restricted gifts, and the application of donations to existing restricted gifts.
- Perform and review accounting transactions and processes adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for the endowment, other investments, and related cash balances.
- Administer proper monthly closing procedures, including necessary reconciliations and analysis.
- Ensure proper controls exist for completeness and accuracy of the endowment platform and general ledger balances.
- Maintain processes within the Workday Endowment Module.
- Ensure complete and accurate reporting to all areas of the institution and third parties as necessary. This includes the reporting of the monthly share calculations for each endowment pool.
- Effectively collaborate with a diverse team, and contribute to an intentionally inclusive culture.
- Lead the project management activity to explore, evaluate, and potentially migrate the management of Endowment funds to a custodial model.
Supervision
- Lead a team of 1-2 additional employees that hold journal entry responsibilities and exposure to cash accounts.
- Implement best practices regarding inclusive leadership, including but not limited to providing regular, timely feedback and working towards a sense of belonging for staff.
Assistance to Controller
- Assist with the annual completion and closure of the general ledger and the independent audit of financial statements.
Endowment Accounting Campus Interface
- Provide reports and analysis as necessary to colleagues on a direct basis, including the monthly endowment share values and restrictions/expenditures on various funds.
- Proactively communicate with campus colleagues regarding the status of their unrestricted funds to drive higher utilization rates.
- Serve as the point of contact for SSGA for accounting/investment questions.
Oversight of Interest/Principal Payment
- Responsible for the oversight of monthly College bond interest payments and semiannual principal payments.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- Three years of related experience and an understanding of GAAP
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong focus on attention to detail and accuracy
- Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to set, prioritize, and complete responsibilities effectively in an independent manner
- Commitment to or experience working with a diverse community
Preferred
- Workday Financials, including the Endowment Module experience
- Accounting for and administering endowment processes experience
- Higher education experience
- Participation in data preparation and communications during independent financial statement audits
